piano lessons at JWA

Piano and keyboard lessons are available at JWA with Gavin Ahearn, Roshan Kumarage, and Jacob Jayasena McCormick. The lessons are at our studio in Crows Nest- St Leonards very close to the station, buses and easy parking. The Jazz Workshop is easy to get to for students in any of our local suburbs, like Artarmon, Chatswood, North Sydney, Cammeray, and Neutral Bay. Our piano students come from all over the north shore, Sydney CBD, and even further afield.

Students of all ages and standards are welcome*. Jazz Workshop caters particularly to students who want to learn to play jazz or who are looking for an alternative to traditional exam-based teaching methods, but of course you can learn traditional classical piano too.

*Very young children must take a trial lesson to gauge their readiness before we can accept them as ongoing students.

Piano lessons with Gavin Ahearn (M.Mus, B.Mus.)

“a beautiful, lyrical pianist… eking out the deeply affecting & truly extraordinary”Australian Stage.

Gavin can help you achieve your musical goals on the piano, whether you, or your child, are a beginner or an advanced student, or returning to piano after a time away. Lots of people stop playing when they finish school but then come back to piano later on. Others have learnt classical piano, frequently to a high level, and are looking to broaden their musical horizons with jazz piano lessons.

Gavin Ahearn is a pianist, composer, arranger and producer. He has performed/recorded with a variety of Australia’s leading artists including Neilsen Gough, Bri Cowlishaw, Liam Burroughs, Danni Da Ros, Adrian Mears, Toby Hall Band, Bob Henderson, Ed Wilson Big Band, Sussurro (Brazilian band), Normie Rowe, Dylan Foster (Singapore), Synergy Percussion and many more.

Gavin led his own U.S. based ensemble for 7 years which featured New York musicians Mike Dopazo and Christian Coleman plus Atlanta bassist Chris Riggenbach. The quartet recorded Gavin’s debut album in New York, Flight of the Arctic Tern, which received distribution in the U.S. and Japan. Gavin has performed in venues around the world from Mo I Rana near the arctic circle in Norway through Europe and the US to venues in South East Asia.

Gavin is also involved in music production and film/tv scoring with his compositions being used in a number of TVC’s and short films. Gavin is also on the faculty at The Australian International Conservatorium as well as The Jazz Workshop.

Gavin is a wonderful piano teacher comfortable teaching everyone from young beginners to advanced adults. He is happy to help prepare students for HSC and school performances.

Roshan Kumarage (B.Mus)

Roshan Kumarage is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He is an experienced teacher and high-level professional performer who helps his students achieve excellent results. Roshan teaches both jazz and classical piano and is happy to prepare students for exams, if that is what you are looking for. Ages 8+, all levels.

Jacob Jayasena McCormick

Jacob Jayasena is a graduate of Jazz Workshop Australia. He is a fastidious and well-prepared teacher who inspires his students and helps them to excel. He is also a rapidly rising star of the Australian jazz piano scene – already headlining major Sydney jazz clubs as a bandleader. Jacob is one of our younger teachers but already has experience teaching piano and is part of our mentorship program for jazz educators. Jacob specializes in jazz and improvised piano, but also teaches classical piano should you want that. All ages considered (very young children are always subject to a trial lesson to gauge their readiness).

Jazz improvisation coaching

Private and group jazz improvisation coaching is available to anybody at JWA. Gavin Ahearn, and many of the other teachers, can give one-on-one coaching to you or your child, regardless of your instrument. It is about concepts, skills, and techniques; if you/your child can already play an instrument well, or have a good instrumental teacher, then this kind of coaching is ideal. You don’t learn how to play your instrument in the impro coaching, you learn how to play jazz. The group lessons are in bands of mixed instruments, called jazz combos. Find out more about our jazz combos. Lessons can be either ongoing, occasional, or a short series.
