Trumpet lessons are available with Deven Rahman, Bernice Tesara, and Eric Dunan at the JWA Studio in St Leonards /Crows Nest. The venue is very close to the station and public transport with easy parking making it easily accessible from all parts of the the north shore, the Sydney CBD and even the inner west, and just minutes away from Chatswood, Artarmon, Neutral Bay, and North Sydney.
Students of all ages and standards are welcome. Jazz Workshop caters particularly to students who want to learn to play jazz or who are looking for an alternative to traditional exam-based teaching methods. Students of classical trumpet and those interested in sitting exams are also welcome. Deven can give classical and band trumpet lessons along with jazz. Everybody is welcome. Deven is happy to teach beginners and adults.
Deven Rahman is an experienced trumpet teacher equally at home teaching jazz or classical repertoire, including exam preparation.
He is lead trumpet in the the Sydney Conservatorium Big Band and former lead trumpet of the Sydney Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) and in . He has studied jazz at the University of NSW with Alister Spence and Sandy Evans, and at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As well as big band work, Deven performs professionally as a freelancer in a wide range of jazz, commercial, and pop groups. He is also an award-winning composer and arranger.
Bernice is an wonderful trumpeter, educator and composer. Experienced in teaching jazz and classical music, she has worked with primary and high school students, adults and jazz combos. She is invested in creating an individualised approach for each student, acknowledging that learning is different for each person.
As a performer Bernice has collaborated with artists such as Will Vinson, G Flip and Yan Collazo, and leads jazz quintet the Return of the Bern. She plays professionally in a variety of settings on the Sydney scene, including pop, commercial music and salsa as well as jazz.
Eric Dunan has been playing trumpet for professionally for over 30 years. In the 1990’s he was a freelance musician in San Francisco. As well as playing in jazz, salza, and R&B bands, he toured with the well-known Soul-Rock Band Lydia Pense and Cold Blood before moving to Australia in 2001.
While in Australia, he has distinguished himself as an authority in Music Education who has adjudicated the Sydney Eisteddfod numerous times and is a regular staff member at Jazz Workshop Australia’s Summer Jazz Camp. He currently heads the Jazz Program at The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music where he leads the Award-winning Wollongong Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra which has toured China, Japan, and America and performed with musicians including Australian artists James Morrison, Sandy Evans and American Artists Bobby Shew and Fred Wesley. Eric’s former students include Freedman Fellowship Winners and National Jazz Award Nominees as well as some of Australia’s most celebrated Jazz Musicians.
All of the teachers at the Jazz Workshop can give lessons in jazz improvisation to any student, regardless of their instrument. Saul Richardson specialises in teaching improvisation to beginners and young players. Other JWA teachers, such as Jeremy Rose and Peter Farrar offer coaching to advanced students and professional players.
