 Deven Rahman – trumpet teacher

Deven Rahman (B.Mus.) is an experienced trumpet teacher equally at home teaching jazz or classical repertoire, including exam preparation. An acclaimed educator, Deven is one of Australia’s best trumpet teachers. He has the skill, experience, and deep knowledge to teach to the highest level. Deven combines this with the humility, patience, kindness, and educational insight needed for instructing young beginners.

He is an in-demand session player, compser-in-residence for the South Coast Big Band, and is a member of Jason Isaac’s Tuesday Night Jazz Orchestra (TNJO). Deven also plays in the contemporary quartet Strands and leads his own group ‘Devtet”.

Deven’s quality and dedication to craft was evident even in his student days. He held the prized lead trumpet chair in the Sydney Conservatorium Big Band and was former lead trumpet of the Sydney Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) in the days when that group was a tertiary ensemble. He studied jazz at the University of NSW with Alister Spence and Sandy Evans, and at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As well as big band work, Deven performs professionally as a freelancer in a wide range of jazz, commercial, and pop groups. He is also an award-winning composer and arranger.

Jazz Improvisation

Almost all of the teachers at the Jazz Workshop can give lessons in jazz improvisation to any student, regardless of their instrument. If you’re studying jazz at JWA, then your private lessons will include teaching in jazz improvisation. Lessons also include technique, theory, learning repertoire, music reading, and the other fundamentals of effective music education. Another extremely effective way to learn improvising and playing jazz is through our famous jazz combos, small jazz bands with weekly rehearsals that include structured coaching in impro and all aspects of live jazz playing. Learn more about the JWA jazz combos program for all ages: children, teens, and adults.
