JWA graduate Damon Poppleton has won the prestigious $10,000 James Morrison Scholarship for 2019 at the recent Generations In Jazz festival in Mt Gambier, South Australia.

The Scholarship is for jazz musicians aged 19 and under. Damon was one of six finalists selected by audition from all over Australia and was the sole representative from NSW. Finalists perform in front of a crowd of thousands in the GIJ main marquee for their final adjudications.

Damon joined JWA combos aged 8 originally on drums before switching to alto sax at 11. He was a member until age 15 when he began playing professionally. He is also a regular at Summer Jazz Camp where he also won the Sarah Waugh scholarship for 2019-20. We are so proud of what Damon has already achieved and can’t wait to see what he can do in years to come.

Well done Damon!
