JWA at Merimbula Jazz Festival 2024

Merimbula Jazz Festival 2024

As is our tradition at Jazz Workshop Australia, a number of our bands and students will be performing at the annual Merimbula Jazz Festival, 7-10 June. Merimbula is a small seaside town on the far South Coast of NSW. The Merimbula Jazz Festival 2024 will be the 42nd edition of this long-running festival.

For anyone who may be reading this familiar with certain types of band education, in this case ‘festival’ doesn’t mean some kind of band competition. It is a music festival organised by musicians and jazz lovers, mostly associated with the Down South Jazz Club. Most of the performers are not school students, but it is a very inclusive event with an extremely supportive audience who welcome and encourage younger performers.

Many of the founding members of the festival are no longer with us. It has changed over the years from an exclusively ‘trad jazz’ festival to a far more diverse program, reflecting the changing demographic of audiences and performers. Plenty of young musicians who first experience the Merimbula Jazz Festival  as school or JWA students later go back to perform with their own bands or take their own kids to watch.

We can’t take everyone from JWA with us, much as we’d like to. This year the performers from JWA will be playing in three bands: Young Jazz Workshoppers, Chordcfraft Quartet, and the irrepressible Sydney Youth Jazz Orchestra. JWA & SYJO leader, Saul Richardson, will also be playing with the Paul Dion Quartet. Watch out for us in a couple of other ‘off program’ gigs around Merimbula.
