You asked for it, and so we are pretty excited to be presenting a jazz camp for adults again, after a very long hiatus. I can’t remember when we last did it, but it was way back in the long ago. For any bass players reading this, ‘hiatus’ means a break. (Joke, please don’t cancel me).
Adult jazz camp, 2023, will be a non-residential camp held over a Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday at the JWA studio in St Leonards. It is Friday 14 to Sunday 16 July.
Those attending the camp will play in small, improvising groups (combos), a larger reading group (big band), learn about improvisation, jam, enjoy good company, hear a concert by a visiting band, play a concert at the end-of-camp, and more. And there will be some wine, beer, and other refreshments for the thirsty. Needless to say, ‘Adult Jazz Camp’ is strictly a jazz camp for adults 18+.
Because the venue is the JWA studio space and, therefore, numbers will be limited.
If this one goes well, then we might even look at a ‘sleepover’ camp next year, held off site. The general format will be much the same as our jazz camps for kids and teens, but with wine and cheese added. For anyone thinking of travelling from out of town for this, there are hotels nearby, with a choice between nice, good, and adequate. But we are near the station, so stay anywhere in the city – it’s easy to get to JWA by public transport.
Staff will be announced closer to the time of the camp, certainly by the time it starts, if not just after. They will be fine musicians and, most importantly, excellent teachers.
