Adult Jazz Camp
Adult jazz camp is your chance to play jazz in a big band and combos, learn more about jazz and improvisation, and enjoy jazz in great company.
is a music camp for adults held Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday at the JWA studio in St Leonards. It is non-residential, but there are good hotels nearby if needed.
This camp is for adults aged 18+ who can already play an instrument. No previous jazz experience is necessary, and this camp is designed for new and intermediate jazz students. Pretty well any instrument is fine for this camp: check with us if you aren’t sure. Vocalists can do the camp if they are prepared to use their voice as an instrument, just like everyone else.
There are groups for inexperienced and intermediate jazz students.

$440 per person (incl. GST). Payment can be via PayPal, credit card, or direct deposit. There is an extra fee for card & PayPal.
What to expect at adult jazz camp
Inclusions: Camp activities, tuition, materials, concert by visiting band, Friday night finger food & refreshments; BYO lunch & snacks or visit one of the many local restaurants & cafes. Here are the main things you’ll do at Adult Jazz Camp:
- be part of an improvising jazz ensemble (‘combo’)
- experience playing in a reading ensemble (‘big band’)
- get expert instruction in jazz improvisation
- join a jam session
- enjoy a private concert by a visiting professional band
- perform for family & friends at the end of camp concert (4pm Sunday)
- dip into other jazzy delights such as short-but-fascinating talks and masterclass (depending on numbers & instruments)
Who can come to adult jazz camp?
Adult jazz camp is only for adult musicians 18+. Players at all stages along their jazz journey are welcome: jazz beginners to experienced (there are groups for different experience levels); all common instruments including strings; You should already be able to play your instrument, even if not to an advanced level. Reading music is not 100% essential but is a HUGE advantage.

Other JWA jazz camps
During school holidays we often run short camps and workshops for children, teens, and adults.
Anyone too young for this jazz camp for adults can come to one of our camps for young musicians: Winter Jazz Camp in July (ages 9 to 16), Summer Jazz Camp in January (ages 10 – 19). Keen musicians of all ages can join a jazz band at JWA and benefit from weekly rehearsals in one of our famous jazz combos (small bands with improvisation training & more). JWA really is Sydney’s best place to learn jazz, whatever you age or experience.
