Lessons are available with Deven Rahman and Robert Campbell.
Students of all ages and standards are welcome. Jazz Workshop caters particularly to students who want to learn to play jazz or who are looking for an alternative to traditional exam-based teaching methods. Exams are available through the JWA Jazz examination system. We have three trumpet teachers on our faculty:
Robert Campbell, B.Mus
Robert Campbell is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Performance. Whilst at the Conservatorium he studied improvisation with Warwick Alder. Robert is currently studying a Masters of Teaching at the University of Western Sydney. He has taught a large array of students, tailoring his teaching methods for each of the students’ individual musical interests. With a sound knowledge of the NSW high school music syllabus, Robert is able to link his teachings to classroom work if required.
Robert started out playing in brass bands as a young child. He has since gone on to playing in big bands, latin and jazz ensembles. He has played in big bands since he was in high school. Robert currently plays in three big bands including the Sydney Jazz Orchestra and Jenna Cave’s Divergence. He plays lead trumpet and also as a part of the trumpet section.
Deven Rahman is an experienced teacher equally at home teaching jazz or classical repertoire, including exam preparation.
He is lead trumpet in the Sydney Youth Jazz Orchestra (SYJO) and in the UNSW Jazz Orchestra. He has studied jazz at the University of NSW with Alister Spence and Sandy Evans. As well as big band work, Deven performs professionally as a freelancer in a wide range of jazz, commercial, and pop groups.
All of the teachers at the Jazz Workshop can give lessons in jazz improvisation to any student, regardless of their instrument. Saul Richardson specialises in teaching improvisation to beginners and young players. Other JWA teachers, such as Jeremy Borthwick, Gai Bryant and James Ryan love to teach very advanced concepts.
So, whatever instrument you or your child play, one of our teachers can give lessons in jazz improvisation. Lessons can be either ongoing, occasional, or a short series. Call or email for details
